Physical fitness has always been a priority to Janice Nichols. As a young child, she was drawn to all physical pursuits and spent her high school and college years pursuing aerobics, running and martial arts. After graduating from the University of Memphis, Janice was hired with the Dallas Police Department and eventually promoted to Corporal Investigator in Vice and Narcotics for the City of Dallas. Janice continued to train in strenuous and challenging conditions, all requiring relentless physical demands. Following the birth of her third child, Janice made the decision to stay at home with her children and to continue her fitness training while studying and attending a variety of exercise workshops and seminars. |
Janice Nichols has achieved a high level of success in a wide variety of fitness disciplines over the past 20 years. While rearing her five children, she began a journey learning various exercise programs. In 1990 she began her professional fitness career teaching aerobic and step classes in a fitness club, as well as arthritis pool and lumbar stabilization classes. As her interest moved beyond aerobics to personal training she obtained her Personal Trainer and Biomechanics Certification through the Cooper Aerobics Center in Dallas, Texas in 1995.
While working as an aerobics instructor and personal trainer, relying on free weights and weight machines, she discovered an exercise method called Pilates. With her understanding of movement and body mechanics she immediately recognized how the Pilates method would impact the fitness world beyond professional dancers.
After completing over 500 hours of rigorous study and training under the supervision of some of the leading Pilate's instructors in the United States, Janice obtained her Pilates Mat Certification in 1997 and Equipment Certification in 1999. Janice received her Pilate's Certification through Core Dynamics Pilates in Santa Fe, New Mexico from Michele Larsson, one of the most respected and well known Pilate's teachers in the country.
Janice continued to work at the gym and convinced the gym owner to allow her to have a small room to conduct Pilates classes. Her Pilates business began to grow and she realized that many of her new clients were coming in with aggravating injuries and found that Janice's Pilates training was therapeutic. Her clients' bodies began to change. The buzz was that "Janice's workouts changed my body." Clients were dropping sizes, postures were improved, strengths were gained, and opinions of this "new kind of workout" were positively phenomenal to the point that additional space to accommodate the client base was needed. So she decided to lease a small space and open her first studio, Janice Nichols Studio-Pilates. Janice's program shot to the top with four instructors and a busy schedule.
As Janice's children began to enter the sports world with various training and conditioning programs, she began her own sports conditioning programs that utilized Pilates techniques. After years of training and working with athletes and coaches involved in tennis, soccer, basketball and volleyball, she created tailored training programs for each sport activity based on Pilates. Janice then discovered that not only were her "Pilates only clients" making progress, but her athletes were also making remarkable improvements in strength, flexibility, coordination and balance. This combination of Pilates and her conditioning program provided an effective and practical approach to functional core training.
At the peak of her success in north Texas, Janice had an opportunity to come to Austin where two of her children were pursuing their tennis training. The Nichols family moved to Austin in 2004 where Janice established and managed the Pilates fitness program at renowned Barton Creek Resort & Spa. Like her first studio, the program was based on her fusion of Pilates techniques and athletic training movements. She fell in love with Austin, its people and their health conscious lifestyles and her program grew where she found herself once again needing to open her own studio.
In the summer of 2008 Janice opened the doors to her Austin studio to train clients in her unique workout program called HOTTIE PILATES.
